5 Things To Know About Tile

In my not-so-secret past, I spent 8+ years working hands-on in the tile industry working both retail as well as overseas purchasing, and dealt daily and very closely with factories all over the world. While everything that I am sharing with you is information that a knowledgeable salesperson will know and can also tell you, I find it always better to get information ahead of time. That being said, I have for you 5 of the top tips and tricks to keep in mind when purchasing tile for your home.

1- Tiles are versatile. Yes, they are primarily used in wet spaces, but they also look AMAZING in unexpected places. Think focal points; fireplaces, foyer and entryways, stair risers, headboards, and ceilings. There is so much new technology in tile manufacturing that allows for exciting colors, textures, and shapes. Take advantage and have some fun!

2- Just like fashion, tile styles are constantly changing. The trick is to pick something that you love and speaks to YOUR sense of style. What you love now, you will always love and will not feel the need to update. Find what calls to you and... GO WITH IT!

3- Order your tiles in advance with plenty of extra waste. Just in case.

Mistakes happen and you want to be prepared. It is a big headache to find in the middle of a job that you did not order enough, there was breakage upon delivery, or there was more waste than originally estimated. Popular tiles can sell quickly and if for any reason you need more material you want to make sure you are getting more from the same lot.

4- Large format tiles make your space look bigger. They require fewer grout joints and will give you a seamless look.

Before ordering large-size tile (larger than 24 inches) it is important to plan the tile layout and grout lines so you can maximize coverage and ensure you are purchasing the correct amount. Once you have the layout, count the amount of tiles you need and order by full boxes. Getting an extra box is a good idea since any breakage requires a full-piece replacement.

5- Mosaics and waterjets are the jewels of design. They add pattern, color, and dimension to any room. As a plus, mosaics are great anti-slip options for bathroom floors! Do not be afraid of marble. The natural material is beautiful and really enhances any space. While it does require a bit more care than porcelain, the aesthetics are not so easily replicated.
